How we test and grade refurbished lab instruments
2026-02-10
Buying pre-owned lab equipment saves 40–70% versus new, but only if you know exactly what condition you're getting. Vague listings are where used-equipment deals go wrong. Here's how we grade and test every instrument, so there are no surprises on arrival.
Our three condition grades
Refurbished — the unit has been cleaned, serviced, had worn or consumable parts replaced as needed, and tested to confirm it functions to the manufacturer's published specification. This is our highest grade and what most buyers want.
Used – Tested — the instrument is fully functional and has been power-tested and verified, but is sold in its current cosmetic condition without a full refurbishment. Expect normal signs of lab use.
As-Is — sold for parts, repair, or as a project. These are clearly marked and priced accordingly, with known faults disclosed up front.
What "function-tested" means
Before an instrument ships we confirm it powers on, initialises, and completes its core operations — pumps prime and hold pressure on a chromatography system, lasers fire and detectors respond on a flow cytometer, an optics self-test passes on a plate reader, and so on. We photograph the actual serial-numbered unit and confirm its configuration in writing at quote time, so the item you're quoted is the item you receive.
What isn't included by default
Manufacturer warranties don't transfer on the secondary market; instead every unit carries our own 30-day functional guarantee. Control or analysis software, licenses, columns, and consumables are only included when the quote says so. If a specific software version, module, or accessory matters for your workflow, tell us before you buy and we'll confirm it.
